MORTENSEN RACE REPORT FOR 8/1/09

After qualifying third in heat race number two on Saturday August, 1 Mark Mortensen started the 20-lap Sportsman feature event in the sixth position in the Jumpin’ Jack’s Drive-In sponsored #1M. By lap five Mortensen got by Justin Auspelmyer for the third position with Luke Munroe also getting by Auspelmyer for the fourth spot. On lap seven, Mortensen and Munroe were side by side for the third position which Munroe was able to take over one lap later. The caution flag was out just before the halfway point in the event and on the restart both Munroe and Mortensen got by Neil Erickson for the second and third positions respectively. David Towns was the winner of the event followed by Munroe, Mortensen, John McAuliffe, and Erickson. The third place finish moved Mortensen up to the fourth place in the point standings, 38 points behind point leader David Towns with only two races remaining to decide the 2009 Sportsman Track Champion. Also on August 1 the Mortensen Motorsports Racing Team took part in a bicycle giveaway during the Jack Lockhart Memorial Dash for Cash for Sportsman division drivers who had never won a feature event at the Track of Champions, Fonda Speedway. The Mortensen family is friends with the Lockhart family and decided to donate a boys and girls bicycle along with two helmets to two lucky children on the evening that the Lockhart Dash was held. The Fonda Futures Kid’s Club took care of registering the children for a free chance to win the bicycles which was open to any child up to age 12. During victory lane ceremonies for the Lockhart Dash which was won by Jason Memrick the bicycles were awarded to Katie Reynolds and Shane Pohl with Mark Mortensen posing for pictures with the winners of the two bicycles. Mark also presented the two children with the bicycle helmets along with an autographed picture of the Mortensen #1M race car making it a special evening for the two very excited young children.
